The comparison of boiler plate grades such as ASME SA516 is not an exact science and care must be taken when using a comparable or equivalent grade to ensure that it delivers all the requirements in the engineering specification.
We’ve tried to present the most common comparison grades below in a couple of different formats. The focus is mainly on American (ASTM and ASME) and Euronorms (EN10028) grades.
Grades and equivalents table:
ASME | ASTM | DIN17155 | EN10028 | BS1501
Name | Number | ||||
SA 516 60 | A 516 60 | HII | P265GH | 1.0425 | 161 430A |
SA 516 65 | A 516 65 | 17Mn4 | P295GH | 1.0481
SA 516 70 | A 516 70 | P355GH | 224-490 A & B |
ASME and ASTM grades are directly comparable and are often written A/SA 516 or SA/A 516 which is the same as A516 or SA516. ASTM (which is derived from the American Society for Testing and Materials) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) work closely together and many of their standards are harmonised.
For EN 10028 P indicates that it is a pressure grade steel. The number is the yield strength when the plate is less than 16mm thick.
N indicates room temperature quality,
NH steels are for elevated temperature,
NL1 steels are of low temperature quality and NL2 steel – special low temperature quality.
GH steels are for elevated temperature working.

SA 516 equivalent Indian standard material
Is A/SA 516 GR. 70 equivalent of A572 GR.70
No, A/SA 516 GR. 70 and A572 GR.70 are not equivalent grades of steel.
A/SA 516 GR. 70 is a pressure vessel plate grade steel used for moderate and lower temperature service, while A572 GR.70 is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel used in various applications such as bridges, buildings, and construction equipment.
While both steels have similar mechanical properties, including yield strength and tensile strength, their chemical compositions and intended uses are different. Therefore, they cannot be considered equivalent.
